Amnesty for tax credit overpayments
Early Day Motion (number 546)

Join Child Poverty Action Group in its support for Early Day Motion (number 546) calling for an amnesty in respect of all tax credit overpayments for the first two years of the scheme.

Why CPAG supports EDM 546

  • We are concerned about the hardship caused to families by recovery of tax credits incurred in 2003/04 and 2004/05.
  • We believe that the burden of assessing disputed overpayments will overwhelm Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) precisely when it needs to do the work to ensure the same level of overpayments do not occur in future.
  • We believe that public confidence in tax credits has been tarnished and needs to be restored.

What you can do to support the campaign

You can contact your MP to encourage her/him to sign this EDM. If you want to check first whether s/he has already signed it follow this link http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=28794

How to contact your Member of Parliament:
The House of Commons website maintains a database of Members of Parliament, most of whom have email addresses, which can be accessed by:

Once you have contacted your MP, please let us know you have done so by emailing info@cpag.org.uk with the words ‘EDM 546’ in the message header. This will help us monitor the progress of our campaign.

Some MPs are not allowed to sign EDMs, such as those who are Ministers and Parliamentary Private Secretaries. However, we would still urge you to write to them to inform them of the problem.

Many thanks for your support.
