Response to Fabian Society report LIFE CHANCES: What do the public really think about poverty?
08.03.05

Responding to today’s report on child poverty, the Child Poverty Action Group's Chief Executive Kate Green OBE said,

'Today’s report is very welcome and is a timely reminder to the Government, on the eve of an election campaign, that child poverty can and must be raised up high on the political agenda.

'CPAG, along with many others, has repeatedly called for government to win the hearts and minds of the public on the issue of child poverty. The Fabian Commission has found that despite the fact that the ambition to end child poverty is relatively unknown, an important ‘public chord’ can still be struck.

'We support the recommendations that demand that the Government challenges poverty myths and ensures that support for parents is adequate.

'It is striking that on the eve of the last Budget shortly before an expected General Election, this report makes clear that there is a clear and powerful business case for an affluent nation like Britain to tackle child poverty.'
