| New
handbook helps parents through child support maze
18.01.06
As the Government
prepares to announce the conclusions of a “root and branch” review
of the troubled Child Support Agency (CSA), a new guide to help
parents through the current child support system has been published.
The
13th edition of the Child
Support Handbook, published by the Child Poverty Action
Group, has been fully updated to give clear, practical guidance
to the child support scheme.
The annually-updated
handbook covers: the CSA; interviews and decision making by the
Benefits Agency/Jobcentre Plus; applications; information seeking
powers; revisions, supersessions and appeals; maintenance collection
and enforcement; the old scheme formula and departures from the
formula.
There are practical
examples, and tactical hints and arguments for use when supporting
good cause, review or appeal. The handbook is fully indexed and
cross-referenced to legislation and case law, and to CPAG’s Welfare
Benefits and Tax Credits Handbook. The Child
Support Handbook is the standard guide for claimants and
other parents affected, solicitors, welfare rights advisers, CAB
staff, social workers, women's groups and children's charities.
Kate Green,
Chief Executive of CPAG, said: “While the CSA remains such a mess,
this latest edition of our handbook remains indispensable. This
is one of our most popular books and we receive lots of positive
feedback from parents and advisers who have used it to successfully
navigate their way through the maze that is the child support system.
“Like millions
of parents we’re waiting for details of the government’s review
of the CSA and in the next edition of the handbook we will be giving
guidance on what we hope to be a better, more effective child support
system.”
The handbook
costs £21.50 plus £3.99 postage (or £6.00, post
free, for individual benefit claimants – direct from CPAG). To order
