group welcomes Cabinet post for social exclusion
24.02.06
The Child Poverty
Action Group (CPAG) has welcomed news that the Prime Minister is
to appoint a new Cabinet Minister to tackle social exclusion.
Kate Green,
Chief Executive of CPAG, said:
“At a time
when the Government must step up the pace to meet its pledge to
halve child poverty by 2010, this is a much needed and welcome
move.
“It makes
a lot of sense to have somebody at the top of Government whose
sole task is to bring together different agencies and departments
to tackle poverty, inequality and social exclusion. Although the
Social Exclusion Unit established in 1997 has done some good work,
it has often lacked political clout.
“CPAG looks
forward to working with the new Minister, but they must be given
the resources and political will to deliver real improvements
for the poorest and most socially excluded people in our society.”
