Chancellor's Speech – charity welcomes child poverty mission
26.09.05

Gordon Brown's renewed commitment to end child poverty has been welcomed by a leading children's charity.

The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), which marks its fortieth anniversary this year, said that the Chancellor's rhetoric must become a reality once the Labour Party Conference is over.

Kate Green OBE, Chief Executive of CPAG, said:

"Gordon Brown spoke with great passion about the injustices of millions of children growing up in poverty and not realising their full potential. CPAG warmly welcomes the Chancellor's renewed commitment to end child poverty once and for all.

"Labour should be congratulated on its efforts so far, but if the Government is to meet its own ambitious targets to end child poverty it needs to go further and faster.

"Once this Conference is over Gordon Brown's rhetoric must become a reality. He needs to get a firmer grip of the tax credits system and do more to help the very poorest families in greatest need.

"While international poverty has rightly been at the top of the political agenda this year we cannot ignore the poverty that still exists closer to home. We need a Make Poverty History in the UK campaign and a new mission against domestic poverty."
