Moving the goalposts on child poverty

Official figures due out tomorrow are projected to show a rise in child poverty – a trend independent experts suggest may continue over the next five years, as we move further and further away from the Government’s legal target to eliminate child poverty by 2020.

In response, it is reported, the Prime Minister is looking at changing how we measure poverty, and scrapping the Child Poverty Act. It’s a tactic that looks remarkably like moving the goalposts.

The real story here is the fast-rising  number of children growing up in hardship and with diminished life chances: it will be hard for them to believe ‘we’re all in this together’.
