New Government research on food banks

20 February 2014

A new research report, commissioned by Defra and published on their website today, states that the evidence points to there being genuine need for food aid in Britian today. The report arrived on the same day as 27 Church of England Bishops wrote to the Prime Minister and warned that coalition policies are creating hardship and hunger.

The Defra report found no evidence that supply is driving the increase in food bank use, but evidence of increased demand; and food bank use is a last resort for people who have run out of other options. The report shows that people go to food banks for both reasons of short-term crisis – job loss or problems with the social security system – or long-term poverty – low income or indebtedness.
