MPs warned poor quality jobs are failing to end poverty for many families

08.11.06

Kate Green, CPAG’s Chief Executive, will today give evidence to MPs on the influential Work and Pensions Select Committee for their enquiry on reaching an 80% employment rate.

A CPAG report submitted to the Committee’s enquiry will also be published today on the group’s website.

Kate Green said:

“Accessing employment is still the most important route out of poverty. But too many hard working parents remain stuck in poverty because their pay is so low. The more hours you work, the more your benefit is withdrawn, so income hardly changes and there is less time and energy to give to the children.

“Our benefits system should do more to reward work, but for families below the poverty line better pay and more opportunities for progression should also be a priority.

“Both the main political parties have committed to ending child poverty by 2020, but we need employers to face up to their responsibilities to provide good quality well paid jobs too. City workers will take home over £8 billion in bonuses this year – double what is needed to put us back on track to meet child poverty targets. All employees should share in the success of British business.”
