Government should act on MPs’ recommendations on child support reform

15.03.07

Commenting on today’s publication of the Work and Pensions Select Committee’s report on ‘Child Support Reform’, the Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group, Kate Green, said:

“There are some important recommendations from the committee that the Government must take on board in the forthcoming Child Support Reform Bill to ensure reform helps children in poverty.

“We strongly endorse the committee’s call for the government to consider a full benefits disregard for child maintenance payments. This would ensure all maintenance money goes towards supporting the child, increasing both incentives to work and incentives for non-resident parents to pay up.

“The Committee has highlighted the importance of access to high quality and trusted maintenance advice services, which will be essential if the new system is going to work. The Government must be prepared to commit the investment necessary to ensure these vital advice services are universally available.”
