Conservatives must back family friendly economy call with firm policies

16.02.07

Commenting on today’s speech on child wellbeing by Conservative leader David Cameron, the Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group, Kate Green, said:

“Cameron is right that factors to do with relationships and our culture matter to child wellbeing. But the UNICEF report could not be clearer that relative poverty is the most important factor of all, damaging health, education, relationship and employment outcomes for children and their families.

“Simply calling on businesses in a competitive economy to act responsibly towards the parents they employ will not work. David Cameron must come forward with the policies that will make all businesses pay parents a fair wage for a family friendly working week. This is one of the best ways of both preventing poverty and supporting stable relationships of all types.”
