Public and politicians must respond to important Barnardo’s report with action to end child poverty

23.05.07

Welcoming the publication today of It doesn’t happen here: The reality of child poverty in the UK, Kate Green, the Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group said:

“We cannot end child poverty in the UK unless we understand its reality. This important report not only gives voice to families who know the reality of living in poverty, but sets out the vital steps we must take if we are to eradicate child poverty.

“It is easy for us to share the aspiration to end child poverty, but it’s action that matters. Politicians and the public alike must respond to this report by giving their full commitment to the policies and investment required.”

Notes to Editors

  • CPAG is a member of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, which is calling for the Government to increase annual investment by £3.8 billion so that the UK can meet the target of halving child poverty by 2010 and remain on track to end child poverty by 2020. (The figure of £3.8 billion comes from analysis by the Institute of Fiscal Studies).
