Cameron must bring his whole party
with him to tackle relative poverty
24.11.06
Commenting on David Cameron’s Scarman Lecture speech ‘From
state welfare to social enterprise: the modern Conservative approach
to tackling poverty’, Child Poverty Action Group’s Chief
Executive, Kate Green, said:
“David Cameron is absolutely right that it is essential
to tackle relative poverty, not just absolute poverty. His whole
party must embrace the importance of relative poverty or remain
unacceptable to voters who saw the relentless growth in inequality
when they were last in office.
“Now that we have welcomed Cameron to the debate, he must
understand that social enterprise is only part of the solution.
Traditionally the Conservatives speak of supporting families and
being a friend of business. They must show this by persuading
business leaders of their moral responsibility to significantly
improve pay for the in-work poor and by improving levels of support
for those families unable to work.”
