CPAG in Scotland Advising Black and Minority Ethnic Communities Project
The advising black and minority ethnic (BME) communities project aims to support those working with both existing and new BME communities, including migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers, to maximize potential income available through the benefit and tax credit system for families and individuals at the risk of poverty.
BME communities have lower take-up rates for tax credits, according to the Revenue’s statistics and research, and child poverty rates for most black and ethnic minority (BME) groups are higher than the national average, as shown by a Department for Work and Pensions research report. For further information please see our article on child poverty among BME groups in Scotland (January 2010).
This project provides a range of training, information, a quarterly e-bulletin and support for organisations and those working with black and minority ethnic groups.
Training
We are running the following training courses as part of our 2011/2012 training programme.
You can book European nationals – benefit essentials, at the special price of £25 per person for organisations in Scotland. We also provide this course in-house for organisations in Scotland for £150 in total for up to 20 people at your workplace or a venue which suits you. For further information and to book a course please email pchalmers@cpagscotland.org.uk.
Do you work with black and minority ethnic communities?
If you are running an event and would like us to attend or are concerned about child poverty and low take-up, and would like us to give a short talk to your organisation or voluntary support group on basic benefits and tax credits, please contact us.
Do you support or advise refugees?
Following consultation with a range of organisations working with refugees, we produced a leaflet Benefits for new refugees. It is aimed at those who have recently been granted leave to remain, including those given leave under the Government’s current legacy review. It explains the main benefits they can claim, when and where to claim benefits and what they can do if they are left without any money whilst waiting for claims to be processed.
Please feel free to print off, copy and distribute this leaflet as widely as possible. If you are distributing large numbers, please contact us and we will ask you to complete a feedback form so that we can continue to meet the needs of those who are advising BME groups.
