Benefits for young people

At 16 some young people can claim benefits in their own right. This course looks at benefits for young people in education or training, in work or looking for work. It also covers benefits for young people with a disability or health problem. The course covers which young people can get:
- Jobseeker’s allowance
- Income support
- Employment and support allowance
- Tax credits
It also looks at what factors to take into account in making the right choice between a parent and young person claiming.

Benefits for young people leaving care half day

Many young people who have been ‘looked after’ by the local authority cannot claim income-related benefits. Instead, the local authority is responsible for supporting them. This course looks at the local authority’s responsibilities towards young people leaving care and which young people are still able to claim benefits.
This half-day course covers:
- The special benefit rules affecting young people leaving care
- Local authorities’ powers and responsibilities
- How to challenge local authority decisions

Looked-after children – benefits for carers and families

This course covers the benefit and tax credit implications of a child being looked after by the local authority away from home, or away from their birth parents eg, being looked after in a residential unit or by foster carers or kinship carers.
This course covers:
- Overview of relevant local authority powers and responsibilities
- What happens to benefits and tax credits when a child is looked after or living away from birth parents
- How to help families avoid overpayments and underpayments
- How local authority payments to carers affect benefits and tax credits
This course will be helpful to advisers and others such as social workers, who are supporting families in these situations. A basic knowledge of the benefit system is assumed.

This half-day course offers practical advice on checking that a family is getting all they should and on how you can help make claims effectively. It aims to help you recognise important issues, and equip you to advise directly or refer for specialist advice.
This course covers:
- An overview of the benefit system with an emphasis on families
- Who should apply for disability living allowance and how to help
- Extra tax credits and benefits that are often overlooked
- What happens when a child turns 16
