Universal credit is a new benefit due to be introduced in October 2013, replacing current means-tested benefits and tax credits for people of working age. It will be the biggest shake-up of the welfare system since its inception. See our universal credit factsheet (see Resources, right) to see who will be affected and when.
This page draws together all CPAG’s work on universal credit, with new information and resources.
Universal credit: good or bad?
CPAG agrees with the aims of simplifying the social security system, improving work incentives and tackling poverty that the Government has stated are behind its proposals. However, it is not yet proven that a universal credit can achieve these aims.
Our approach is one of constructive engagement, aiming through our lobbying and campaigns work to get the best outcomes for children and families. Through our information and training we will help claimants and their advisers through the enormous changes ahead.
